I prefer Sonoma to Napa, it's smaller and its wineries are not as commercial as the ones in Napa. The town of Sonoma is smaller and has a quaint square that is surrounded by organic restaurants and shops. When we go, we stop at the cheese shop at the top of the square (you can't miss it) and pick up some fresh bread, sausage and cheese. When you've found a great wine, buy a bottle and find a great place to rest. My favorite spot to picnic is at Chateau St. Jean on their gorg front lawn. They also make an amazing champagne mustard to go with your snacks. As far as where to stay, I've heard good things about the Inn at Sonoma. Have a great trip and let us know if you'd like more recommendations!
